Pickfair Drive: the little street in the woods I grew up on. Happiness reigns but the bushes are known to contain a bully or
two. Gentle Giant supplies the courage to love life in an odd meter. Pickfair Drive was inspired by my life-long love of such light orchestral pop
classics as Edward White's "The Runaway Rocking Horse" or David Rose's "Holiday for Strings". Such tunes convey a child-like joy through musical
sophistication rather than naiveté. This, then is my first "lab experiment" to try and bring that quality to
music that also knows that 60 years have passed since Holiday for Strings was
written. Also, stubbornly refusing to keep quiet, my twin loves of odd time
signatures and active, part-like bass lines are integrated into the piece. These are
the continuing result of the alteration of my musical mind begun by Gentle
Giant when I was a mere child. Dusty, old MIDI stuff was harmed during the making of this piece. |
