GORGG-TEX
This year's mini-GORGG, happened in Austin, Texas, on the weekend of April 20th-22nd, 2001... oops, check that! Instead, we'll call it a REGIONAL GORGG (by popular demand), not unlike last year's OreGORGG, instead of "mini" per se; 'Cause in TEXAS, everything is bigger! :-)
The weekend long GORGG-TEX came to a close over a lunch of mexinesian food (a fusion of mexican and polynesian) at Hula Hut overlooking beautiful Lake Austin. Antendees in Austin, Texas included James Warren and his wife, Meg, Jesus Tapia and his brother, Jose, Toby Trott, and Austinites Joe Funk and Brad Oldham, and their respective wives, Kathy and Laura. A grand time was had by all.
The festivities began Friday night with a nice steak dinner at a popular 6th Street steakhouse followed by an evening at the Elephant Room watching the local jazz band, Blaze. The Saturday activites began bright and early at 11:30am with lunch at the extremely laid-back and funky Taco Xpress, a picture of which was recently featured on keneally.com. A tour of Barton Springs followed including a walk along the Lake Austin trails. The walk was interrupted briefly by a detour to a local bar for some liquid refeshments. A CD shopping spree followed at Waterloo Records.
The highpoint of the weekend, at least for yours truly, was Saturday night's party at my house featuring a performance by Joe Funk's band, TwoSheds. It was the first performance by TwoSheds since adding their drummer and it was quite impressive. The performance was enjoyed by all. We also listened to lots of prog including GG, X-Legged Sally, Thinking Plague and many others. Plenty of BBQ chicken and beer was consumed. The evening was finished by the watching of several music videos including the GG German ZDF concert, the Genesis performance on Belgian TV from 1972, and the MTV Rock Influences program on progressive rock featuring a performance by Jethro Tull, an interview with Ian Anderson and clips from many other "progessive" rock bands.
I'd like to thank Joe Funk and James Warren for all their work in helping to set up GORGG-TEX, and all the attendees for traveling to Austin to spend the weekend with us. I had a blast and hope to see the James, Jesus, Jose, and Toby again soon as well as other list members.
